Angel among ruins

---

The early morning sun filtered through the large glass windows of the Elysian Hope Foundation, painting warm golden streaks on the tiled floor. The building sat quietly on the edge of the city—where chaos melted into calm—a place that gave shelter not just to the abandoned, wounded animals, but to the forgotten fragments of humanity too. And walking softly amidst those recovering souls, was Seraphina.

Dressed in a simple cotton sundress and tied-up hair, she walked barefoot through the corridor, her delicate fingers holding a clipboard close to her chest. Her presence brought calm. Nurses greeted her with smiles, and caretakers nodded as she passed by, their voices hushed in her sacred morning rounds.

“Good morning, ma’am,”

a young volunteer, Miri, called softly, approaching with a smile.

“The puppy from Sector 9 is responding well to treatment.”

Seraphina’s eyes lit up, the kind of smile that reached her soul blooming across her face.

“That’s beautiful news, Miri I knew he was a fighter.” Her voice was a whisper of spring wind, so gentle it almost felt like a balm.

She moved from room to room—checking on the elderly woman who had no family left, patting the small child who was recovering from a roadside accident, gently running her fingers along the fur of a cat whose legs had been crushed but spirit remained unbroken.

And then, she paused near the entrance, eyes widening at the quiet squeak she heard behind the potted plant near the door. Carefully crouching, she leaned forward and saw a tiny squirrel, bleeding and barely breathing, nestled in a pile of leaves and fear.

Someone must have left her there as it wasn't new for her to see wounded animals at the door of foundation

“Oh no…you poor thing,” she whispered, her heart breaking.

Without a moment’s hesitation, she cradled the fragile creature in her hands, as if holding something sacred. Its tiny body shivered in her palms, and a single tear escaped her eyes.

She rushed inside, gently placing the squirrel on a small towel in the treatment room.

“Get me warm saline, antiseptic, and cotton,”

she said softly but with urgency. Her hands worked like a trained healer but moved with the grace of a nurturer.

“You’re safe now,” she whispered to the squirrel, her voice shaking. “I’ll fix you, I promise.”

A few nurses stopped at the door, watching the scene with warm smiles.

“She’s a miracle in human form,”

whispered Sandra , one of the caretakers.

“No matter how small or broken the soul is… she saves it,” said another.

As they watched Seraphina’s eyes shimmer with worry, Miri smiled.

“I once saw her cry for an earthworm that a kid accidentally stepped on. She buried it, made a little prayer. Said even the tiniest life has a purpose.”

“You’re kidding,” Sandra  gasped.

“Nope. That’s Seraphina.”

The squirrel whimpered, and Seraphina carefully cleaned its wound, whispering soothing words.

“You’re going to be okay, little one. The world might be cruel, but not while I’m here.”

Once bandaged, she gently stroked its head.

“Each life… every single one of them matters. We weren’t given the gift of life just to destroy others. We’re here to protect, to cherish.” Her voice trembled. “Who are we to take a life that we didn’t create?”

“You always say that,” Miri smiled from behind. “And every time, it hits me harder.”

Seraphina looked up and returned a soft smile.

“Because it’s true. Whether it’s an animal, a tree… or even someone society has given up on. If we don’t stand for them… who will?”

Just then, one of the security staff walked over to the treatment room door.

“Mrs. Kim,” he said politely, “your husband is here to pick you up.”

A faint blush crept onto Seraphina’s cheeks.

“Taehyung?” she murmured with a surprised blink.

“He wasn’t supposed to be back until evening…”

Miri  chuckled teasingly. “Aww, the brave officer couldn’t stay away from his angel wife.”

Seraphina smiled shyly and gently patted the squirrel once more.

“Keep him warm. I’ll be back tomorrow morning for his next round.”

As she stood up, her scarf brushed against the little creature. She turned once more before leaving the room, casting a tender glance at all the beings resting inside the foundation.

Her world was made of broken things, of fragile hearts and quiet pain—and yet she carried the strength to heal, to hope, to love.

-

The moment Seraphina stepped out of the foundation gates, the warmth of the late afternoon sun greeted her, brushing her skin in soft hues of gold. The world outside the sanctuary of her foundation was noisier, colder… less kind. But the smile that tugged at her lips grew as she spotted the familiar black SUV parked across the lot.

And there he was.

Leaning casually against the hood of the car, dressed in a fitted black shirt and uniform pants, Officer Kim Taehyung looked like he belonged to an entirely different universe. His dark shades veiled his eyes, but his jaw clenched with a tightness that radiated command. Authority dripped from every inch of his posture—the kind that made people step back in either awe or fear. Most chose fear.

His hands were tucked into his pockets, the wind tousling the ends of his perfectly parted hair. The rigid badge pinned to his shoulder glinted under the sun. Civilians walking past offered hesitant bows; some held their breath.

Taehyung wasn’t just a police officer. He was the kind who didn’t speak twice. The kind who didn’t tolerate second chances.

But the moment Seraphina came running toward him, his expression melted in the blink of an eye.

“Taehyung!” she chirped like springtime, rushing forward before crashing into his chest.

His arms instantly wrapped around her slender frame, and the corners of his lips twitched up into a rare, slow smile. He dipped his head and pressed a kiss to her forehead.

“Easy, tiger,” he murmured, low and teasing.

She pulled back just enough to kiss him—soft at first, but he responded with a passion that made her breath catch. His hand slid to her waist as his lips lingered on hers, devouring her sweetness like a man starved. When they broke apart, Seraphina’s cheeks were flushed and glowing.

He cupped her chin. “How was your day, vet?”

Seraphina—Dr. Seraphina Kim—wasn’t just a veterinarian. She was a healer in every sense of the word. Her hands had stitched up creatures who’d given up on life. Her voice had calmed hysterical parents who brought in their bleeding pets. Her heart bled for every wound she saw—be it on four legs or two. She worked tirelessly at Elysian Hope Foundation, a hybrid sanctuary where both animals and people found refuge. To her, every life mattered. Every soul deserved a chance to heal.

And though the foundation’s funding was meager and its corridors always brimming with suffering, Seraphina never once complained. Instead, she poured her kindness into every heartbeat she saved.

Her compassion was infinite.

And she’d somehow married the storm.

Officer Kim Taehyung. Cold. Merciless. Sharp as a blade. A man known among his ranks as a silent predator. He didn’t talk much, didn’t smile often, and never let his guard down. His gaze alone could freeze a man in his tracks.

But when it came to Seraphina—his wife, his angel, his chaos wrapped in silk—he became a man no one else ever got to see.

“Come,” he said, wrapping an arm around her waist and guiding her to the passenger side. The door opened without a word, and he helped her in, treating her as if she were made of glass.

Once inside, the cool interior offered a stark contrast to the warm sun. The hum of the engine began as Taehyung slid into the driver’s seat.

He glanced sideways.

“I hope today didn’t involve another adventure,” he said dryly, adjusting his sunglasses.

Seraphina gave a guilty smile. “Depends on what you call an adventure.”

He sighed, turning slightly toward her. “Seraphina...”

“Well,” she interrupted before he could lecture,

“I found an injured squirrel outside the foundation. Poor thing was bleeding and terrified. I think it fell from a tree or maybe got attacked by a bird.”

Taehyung stared at her

. “Of course you did,” he muttered. “And I bet you carried it in your bare hands.”

“Yes,” she beamed. “Wrapped it in a towel first.”

“And probably skipped your lunch again because you were nursing it,” he added grimly.

Seraphina looked out the window innocently. “Possibly.”

“Unbelievable,” Taehyung muttered.

There it was again—that ache in his chest. That love-hate pull of irony that had marked their entire marriage. Seraphina loved animals with every beat of her heart. She believed even the smallest ant deserved to live in peace. She fed stray dogs during their late-night walks. She stopped traffic to save a pigeon. She once cried for an entire evening when a lizard she tried to rescue died.

Taehyung, on the other hand, couldn’t stand animals. Their fur, their unpredictability, their mess. He had grown up in a military household where everything had its place and every life had a cost. There was no room for sentiment, no space for bleeding hearts.

The fact that Seraphina had married him—despite their clashing natures—often amused and terrified him. She softened the world he had turned his back on. And he guarded her like the fragile piece of light she was.

She looked at him now, her smile wide. “You’re doing that thing again.”

“What thing?”

“Where you act all grumpy because I saved another life.”

“I’m not grumpy,” he snapped. “I just don’t understand why you have to personally rescue every bleeding creature in the city.”

“Because someone has to.”

Taehyung exhaled, long and slow, then reached out to tuck a stray hair behind her ear.

“One day, your recklessness will drive me mad.”

“I already have,”

she winked, and he couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped him.

They fell into a comfortable silence, his fingers slowly brushing hers. The air between them felt thick with unspoken emotions—he loved her in ways he couldn’t express, and she loved him despite the parts of him that would make others run.

“Do you ever regret it?”

she asked softly, turning her face toward him.

“What?”

“Being with me. When we’re such opposites.”

Taehyung took a moment to answer, then leaned over and pressed a kiss to her knuckles.

“Never,” he whispered against h

er skin. “You’re the only chaos I’d ever welcome.”

And just like that, frost met flame—and didn’t melt.

Here our next leads how was the chapter did you like Seraphina,?
